The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for individuals with developmental disabilities. Ways to help are:
– Coaching (minimum of 2 hours per week for 8 weeks);
– Sports Management (2-3 months to one year);
– Competitions (8 hour shifts one or more days a year); and
– Office Support (generally 4 hours per week)
They pride themselves on offering a wide variety of services to their athletes. Their sports training and competition opportunities provide athletes of all ability levels the chance to play and be part of a team. Skills like being a good teammate, winning with grace, and encouraging others are all skills that carry over into their every day lives. Through sports, they are bringing special education students and general education students on the same playing field, promoting acceptance and respect for all. Their Healthy Athlete Program encourages good health and a healthy lifestyle so that athletes can compete at their very best.
