Meals on Wheels – www.mowsf.org
Their mission is to prepare and deliver nutritious meals necessary to prevent the inappropriate or premature institutionalization of elderly homebound residents in S.F. You can help by serving meals to seniors during weekday lunches, making greeting cards for the homebound and individualized projects. Summer internships for high school students are also available. The minimum age is 14.
Their programs fulfill a moral and economic imperative to care for seniors in the most cost-effective way possible. Studies show that by keeping seniors in their homes they remove a costly burden on seniors, their families, and the American taxpayers. One 2009 study found that if every state increased the number of older Americans who received meals by just 1 percent, it would have saved Medicaid more than $109 million a year.
